In the last meeting with the Children’s Home kids we continue to work in our biggest challenge that found more complications so far: working with scripts in Etoys.
I decided that it is not yet time to start with the last project: the game of Ping Pong. Therefore, we did some practices using scripts, guess what practice? Yes! the little car controlled by a wheel!, I thought of this because when the childrens performed stories with Etoys “Book” tool they loved to use photos of cars.
The evening was fantastic! The childrens understood quite well the concepts of logic programming, there were kids who never saw divisions, so it generated a very interesting talk to understand the concept of “division”.
(The photo was take by a 4 years old boy with the Xo, and the computer is a computer with a broken HD using Sugar On A Stick)
The childrens were very entertained with this activity, changing the speeds to their cars, building new models and changing the colors.
After some frustrating meetings on the issue of scripts, I left the Children’s Home after this meeting, the sun was hiding, and I felt a great satisfaction inside of me🙂.
The next meeting we will continue this activity, we will do a randomly competition with all the little cars, we hope to continue on this path that has become a bit difficult to navigate.
A university moment
Another interesting moment was our first meeting with kids from the university, in this case, with some guys from programming I. They are taking their first steps in programming, acquiring the basic concepts of programming.
It was interesting to see their first reaction to programs with a fully object-oriented environment such as Etoys, in addition to the active exploration in Sugar, they discovered all very quickly.
They asked to me to give them a copy of Sugar On A Stick so they can put it on a USB drive for a further exploration both in Sugar and its activities.
One goal of doing this is to build a platform with university students that can give larger support to other pilot deployments in the city.
