Around the city of Santa Cruz, has been developing some activities related to culture and education. In recent years I’ve seen a considerable growth in this area all over the city.
This time I want to mention two initiatives which I have made contact, with the aim of expanding this project through them, making effective an “inivisible” use of technology in the day to day of the learning process, promoting a more creative and innovative education.
This is the case of “Minga Digital“, an initiative of the Santa Cruz Rotary Club in partnership with other institutions in the city. The goal is to help to reduce the “digital divide” through the delivery of Desktop Computers (In the form of a computer room), in addition to training teachers and students (usually in Microsoft Word and Excel).
My desire is to contribute to the good intentions of this project with the inclusion of Free and Open Source Software, the XO, Sugar, Etoys, Scratch and other tools. In my opinion, Technology can not enter as a simple “computer course”, but as a support in all daily activities for creative and innovative education, as an “invisible” inclusion of Technology in the daily creative work.
I am preparing the best way to integrate these creative tools to make a formal proposal that can be integrated in the “Minga Digital” project and develop different workshops around the months of April or May.
The other initiative that I wanted to mention is the “Bibliobus Santa Cruz”, the idea behind the “Bibliobus” is basically to have a bus turned into a sort of a Mobile Library to bring books to the neighborhoods and read these books in the day.
The Xo could be a library itself. Also, we can make activities for the day to develop creativity with Etoys and other Sugar activities. I think that the Xo can give a very powerful extra bonus to the “Bibliobus Santa Cruz”. So next week I will have a meeting with the people in charge of the “Bibliobus” to use our 3 Xo’s inside the “Bibliobus” in May.
Thus, together, we can begin to grow a movement that allows us to make a much larger deployment in the future, stone by stone to build the mountain of Creativity in Education.
